Government Hindi typing tests use different fonts and keyboard layouts depending on the exam. Knowing which one your exam uses is essential — the key positions are completely different between them.
- Mangal (Unicode) with Inscript layout — the most common in modern exams (SSC, many central and state posts, UP Police). Standardised Devanagari layout.
- Kruti Dev — a legacy font still used by some exams (parts of RRB, some state and court exams). Uses the Remington keyboard logic.
- Remington (GAIL) — the traditional typewriter layout, allowed in exams like CPCT and some CAPF/court posts.
How to enable Hindi typing on your computer
On Windows: go to Settings → Time & Language → Language → Add a language → Hindi, then under Options add the Hindi (Inscript) keyboard. Switch between English and Hindi with Windows + Space. Practise the switch until it's automatic.
What Hindi speed do government exams need?
Most exams require 25–30 WPM in Hindi (about 7,500–9,000 key depressions per hour). Build to 30–35 WPM in practice so you clear the bar comfortably even after error deductions. Accuracy matters as much as speed — every mistake reduces your net score.
