The SSC CHSL Typing Test is the final skill stage of the Combined Higher Secondary Level exam, held in Session-II of Tier-II. The exact rules depend on the post you applied for — the Typing Test for clerical posts and the Skill Test (DEST) for Data Entry Operators. It is qualifying only, but you must clear it to be selected.
SSC CHSL posts and their typing requirements
| Post | Speed | Duration | Language |
|---|---|---|---|
| LDC / JSA / PA / SA | 35 WPM English · 30 WPM Hindi | 10 min | English or Hindi |
| DEO / DEO Grade-A | 8000 KDPH (≈ 27 WPM) | 15 min | English only |
For LDC and similar posts, 35 WPM English corresponds to about 10,500 key depressions per hour (KDPH), and 30 WPM Hindi to about 9,000 KDPH. DEO Grade-A in the CAG office can require a higher speed, up to around 15,000 KDPH.
Error rules and accuracy
Errors are calculated up to two decimal places. The permissible error margin is tighter than SSC CGL — broadly around 7% for UR and about 10% for reserved categories for LDC/JSA, and stricter still (around 5%) for DEO Grade-A in the CAG office. As always, treat these as the ceiling and aim well below them.
The full/half mistake convention applies: wrong, missing or extra words are full mistakes; spelling, spacing and capitalization are half mistakes.
Language and font
You choose English or Hindi in the application form, and the choice is final. DEO is English only. For Hindi typing, be ready for the Kruti Dev or Mangal font and the Remington or Inscript layout depending on the notification.
Interface and what is disabled
The passage appears on screen and you type below it. Backspace is generally available in CHSL typing, but heavy use destroys your speed — train to type cleanly the first time. There is usually no live error highlighting, so practise reading the source passage.
How to clear the SSC CHSL typing test
- LDC/JSA: build to 40+ WPM so 35 WPM under pressure is easy; keep errors under 5%.
- DEO: hit a steady ~30 WPM (8000+ KDPH) with high accuracy; the 15-minute window rewards consistency over bursts.
- Run full-length mocks in your chosen language using the practice tool above.
