The Delhi Police Head Constable (Ministerial) recruitment is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). After the Computer-Based Examination and the Physical Endurance & Measurement Test, candidates face a Typing Test on computer (25 marks) followed by a qualifying Computer (Formatting) Test.
Typing test: speed, time and passage
The typing test runs for 10 minutes and the minimum qualifying speed is 30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi. You are given a printed passage of at least 400 words / 2000 keystrokes (English) or 350 words / 1750 keystrokes (Hindi). No typing is allowed after the 10 minutes end.
It carries marks. Unlike SSC CGL or RRB, the HCM typing test contributes up to 25 marks to your final merit on a sliding scale โ the faster you type (within accuracy limits), the higher your marks. So clearing 30 WPM is the floor, not the goal.
How the marks scale (English example)
Speed achieved
Outcome
Below 30 WPM
Not qualified
31โ35 WPM
Higher marks band
36โ40 WPM
Higher still
41โ45 / 46โ50 / above 50 WPM
Progressively maximum marks
The Hindi bands sit 5 WPM lower at each step. Software calculates gross speed, net speed, accuracy and final marks automatically.
The Computer Formatting Test
Separately, a qualifying Computer (Formatting) Test checks practical skills in MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint โ document formatting, tables, formulas, charts and slide creation. It does not add marks but you must pass it.
How to prepare
Don't just clear 30 WPM โ push to 40โ45 WPM, because every band earns more merit marks.
Practise from a printed/off-screen passage, since the real test gives you a hard copy to type from.
Learn MS Office formatting for the qualifying test โ our CPT course covers exactly this.
Both languages welcome โ choose the one where your accuracy is highest.
