The Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) recruits Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), Lower Division Clerk (LDC) and DASS Grade-IV posts for Government of NCT of Delhi departments. After the written examination (Tier-I), shortlisted candidates must clear a computer typing skill test. The test is qualifying only โ€” it does not add to your merit marks, but failing it removes you from selection regardless of your written score.

Typing standard

LanguageSpeedKey depressions/hourDuration
English35 WPM~10,500 KDPH10 minutes
Hindi30 WPM~9,000 KDPH10 minutes

You type on a computer in the language you opted for. The same standard applies across DSSSB JSA, LDC and DASS Grade-IV posts.

Blind mode: no live error highlighting

This is what catches candidates out. DSSSB's typing software does not show real-time error highlights. You will see no red marks as you type โ€” mistakes are revealed only when the test ends. Backspace is generally allowed, but since you cannot see your errors, you must build the habit of reading the source passage carefully rather than watching your own output. Practise in blind mode (the tool above has highlighting locked off) so exam day feels familiar.

Paper-to-screen mode

DSSSB commonly conducts the test as paper-to-screen: the passage is given on paper and you type it on the computer. Some cycles use screen-to-screen. Practising your eye movement from a printed page to the keyboard โ€” without looking down at your hands โ€” is a distinct skill worth rehearsing.

How net speed is calculated

DSSSB applies the standard government net-WPM formula:

Net WPM = (Total Keystrokes รท 5 โˆ’ Full Mistakes โˆ’ Half Mistakes รท 2) รท Time in minutes

Full mistakes (1 penalty each)

Half mistakes (0.5 penalty each โ€” two halves make one full)

Error tolerance

Typically around 7% for UR and 10% for reserved categories โ€” but this varies by notification. Always confirm the exact permissible error percentage from the instructions for your specific post code, since DSSSB issues post-wise skill-test instructions.

Hindi typing: font and layout

DSSSB's standard for Hindi is the Mangal font with the Unicode Inscript layout. Some older cycles or specific departments have used KrutiDev (Remington). Because the key mapping is completely different between the two, confirm from your post-code notification and practise only the layout you will actually face.

To enable Inscript on Windows: Settings โ†’ Time & Language โ†’ Language โ†’ Add Hindi โ†’ Options โ†’ Add keyboard โ†’ Hindi (Inscript). Switch layouts with Win + Space.

How to clear the DSSSB typing test

  1. Build to 40+ WPM English (or 33+ Hindi) so the 35/30 bar holds under exam pressure.
  2. Practise in blind mode โ€” no highlighting, so you learn to trust the source passage.
  3. Prioritise accuracy โ€” full mistakes cost a whole word each, and they compound fast.
  4. Watch spacing and capitalisation โ€” half mistakes are easy to make and easy to ignore.
  5. Do full 10-minute runs daily to build stamina, not just short bursts.
  6. Hindi candidates: drill Mangal/Inscript specifically.

Use the practice tool above โ€” it loads the DSSSB JSA rules automatically (35 WPM, 10 minutes, blind mode).

Frequently asked questions

What is the typing speed for DSSSB JSA and LDC?
35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi on a computer, in a 10-minute test. That is about 10,500 key depressions per hour for English and 9,000 for Hindi.
Is the DSSSB typing test qualifying or does it add marks?
It is qualifying only. Your Tier-I written score decides your rank; the typing test is pass/fail, but you must clear it to be selected.
How is net speed calculated in the DSSSB typing test?
Net WPM = (Total Keystrokes divided by 5, minus Full Mistakes, minus Half Mistakes divided by 2) divided by Time in minutes. Full mistakes include omitted, extra, wrong, misspelt, repeated and incomplete words; half mistakes include spacing, capitalisation and paragraph errors.
Does DSSSB show error highlighting while typing?
No. DSSSB runs in blind mode with no real-time error highlights, so mistakes appear only after the test ends. Backspace is generally allowed, but you cannot see your errors as you type.
What is the error tolerance in the DSSSB typing test?
Typically around 7% for UR and 10% for reserved categories, though this varies by notification. Always confirm from your post-code instructions.
Which Hindi font does DSSSB use?
Mangal font with the Unicode Inscript layout is DSSSB's standard. Some older cycles used KrutiDev (Remington), so confirm from your notification and practise that layout.
Is the DSSSB typing test paper-to-screen?
DSSSB commonly uses paper-to-screen, where the passage is given on paper and typed on the computer, though some cycles use screen-to-screen. Practise reading from a printed page without looking at your hands.
