TYPINGTESTEXAM.COMTyping Speed Test
Check your typing speed with a dedicated timed workspace. See gross WPM, practice net WPM, accuracy, completion and an explanation of every final-text mistake.
Gross WPM vs net WPM
Gross WPM counts every word you typed, correct or not, divided by the minutes elapsed. Net WPM subtracts a penalty for mistakes, so it reflects what you actually produced correctly rather than how fast your fingers moved. Most exam rules qualify candidates on net WPM, not gross — a fast but error-heavy attempt can score lower than a steadier, more accurate one.
This workspace shows both numbers side by side after every attempt, along with completion (how much of the passage you reached) and accuracy (the share of typed characters that matched the source), so you can see which of the two is actually holding your score back.
Improving your speed, not just your score
Speed usually comes from reducing hesitation and unnecessary backspacing, not from moving your fingers faster. Touch-type without looking at the keyboard, correct a mistake only if you catch it immediately, and let small errors go rather than stopping mid-passage — the net WPM calculation already accounts for them. Testing at a fixed duration regularly (see the 10-minute and 15-minute tests) makes it easier to tell whether you're genuinely improving or just seeing normal day-to-day variation.
Frequently asked questions
How is typing speed calculated?
General practice uses NFC-normalized grapheme units divided by five and elapsed minutes. The result separately explains raw errors, weights, accuracy and completion.
Is this an official government evaluation?
No. Each exam can use different instructions. An unverified formula is labelled as a practice simulation; read the selected profile and authority source.
Which features are free?
Global and Basic Exam practice are free. Register free for 15 selectable passages per level and saved results. Pro adds the full bank, four exam layouts, interactive lessons and Create Own Test.
