Light and Heavy Strokes
Objective: Understand light and heavy strokes and apply it through accurate, readable practice before moving to the next lesson.
Understand the concept
Light and Heavy Strokes develops the mechanical foundation of shorthand writing. Study the form slowly, say its sound, write it with controlled movement and then read it back.
In a sound-based system, the spoken sound determines the outline. Ordinary spelling can mislead you, so analyse pronunciation before choosing strokes, vowels, circles, loops or hooks.
Proportion is part of meaning. Direction, relative length, thickness, position, circle size and hook placement must remain distinguishable as speed increases. Follow the chart supplied for your chosen English or Hindi system.

Worked learning examples
- Identify the sound or rule involved in three examples of light and heavy strokes.
