TypingTestExamThe RRB Junior Stenographer posts are recruited under the Ministerial & Isolated Categories notification (CEN 08/2025). Selection runs in stages: a Computer-Based Test (CBT), then a Stenography Skill Test (SST), followed by document verification and medical examination.
Who is called for the skill test
Candidates who clear the CBT are shortlisted for the Stenography Skill Test. RRB typically calls about 10 times the number of vacancies (category-wise) for the skill test, based on CBT merit.
How the Stenography Skill Test works
The SST is a dictation-and-transcription test conducted on computer and carrying 300 marks. A passage is dictated, you take it down in shorthand, and then transcribe it on the computer within the allotted time.
- Hindi candidates must have KrutiDev and Mangal fonts available; the test assesses spelling and editing skills.
- The transcript is checked for accuracy against the dictated passage.
The typing speed behind stenography
Shorthand speed gets the words onto paper, but you still have to type the transcript fast and cleanly. A comfortable computer typing speed of 35–40 WPM ensures you finish transcription inside the time limit. Use the practice tool above to build that transcription speed and accuracy.
How to prepare
- Daily dictation slightly above your target shorthand speed.
- Read-back drills — transcribe your own shorthand under a timer.
- Hindi candidates: practise on KrutiDev and Mangal so font and layout are second nature.
- Keep errors under 10% — the marking is strict, so accuracy is everything.
- Build typing to 40 WPM so transcription never runs out of time.
